BMS Connection, Issues and Errors

Tags BMS budget

BMS is used by budget managers and fiscal service to load and manage annual budgets. BMS runs on a custom application that was designed many years ago. As technology improves and changes, we have run into a few issues with older applications, such as BMS.

If you have issues logging into BMS, please contact Rae Simonson. Your username is not your StarID and is typically the first six letters of your last name and then the initial of your firstname.

BMS will not work with the Office 2019 application installed on most people's computers. There are two solutions at this time:

  1. Connect to NCCApps and use BMS there.
  2. For heavy BMS users, we can also downgrade their version of Office to Office 2016 until budgeting time is over. Please submit a request and someone will contact you about downgrading your Office software.

There are two ways to access NCCApps:

  1. Remote Desktop Connection
  2. Normandale Access

Remote Desktop Connection

  1. On your Normandale computer, click on your Start button
  2.  Type Remote Desktop Connection
  3. Click on the Remote Desktop Connection application
  4. A Window will open

  5.  In the Computer field, enter NCCApps
  6. Click Connect
  7. You can use this screen to open BMS from the Start menu

Normandale Access

  1. Open a web browser to the Normandale home page (www.normandale.edu)
  2. Select Faculty/Staff, then Access Files From Off Campus
*This will redirect you to the Secure Access Service login page (https://access.normandale.edu)
  3. Enter your StarID and password.
  4. Click the Sign In button
  5. Click on the NCCApps link
  6. You can use this screen to open BMS from the Start menu

In order to use the BMS application, please follow these steps:

  1. click on the Start button
  2. Type BMS
  3. Open the BMS Desktop App

Below is a list of BMS errors and their solutions:

  • Error: This database was created with the 32-bit version of Microsoft Access. Please open it with the 32-bit version of Microsoft Access.
Solution: BMS will not work on your computer. Please use NCCApps or contact the ITS Help Desk.

  • Error: "A potential security concerns has been identified. Warning: It is not possible to determine that this content came from a trustworthy source. You should leave this content disabled unless...."
Solution: Click Open. It is safe to open the BMS file. This error is due to the fact that BMS is built on an older version of Access.

  • Issue: I don't have the BMS icon in my Start Menu
Solution: Please contact the ITS Help Desk and make sure that you've been set up for BMS.
