MFA - Enroll Using a Phone to Receive a Voice Call

Setting up MFA is a very simple process, and once it is set up, is very easy to use. It is easiest to use both a computer and mobile device to complete enrollment. There are two steps you will need to take:

  1. Step 1: Enable MFA in one of 2 ways:
    1. Self-Enrollment
    2. Automatic Enrollment
If you've been automatically enrolled, you will see the message "More information required" when you try to log into Office 365 / email.

  2. Configure MFA
Note: Once MFA is enabled, you must configure MFA before you can access your Office 365 email and apps.

2. Configure Multi-Factor Authentication using a phone to make a voice call

To configure Multi-Factor authentication using a phone to recieve a voice call, you will need a computer.

  1. Start the MFA First-Time Setup Wizard to complete your MFA setup.
Note: You need to complete the MFA Wizard before you can access your emails and other information in Office 365.  If you do not complete the Wizard successfully or cancel the Wizard, you will not be able to access your emails, files, or applications in Office 365 until MFA is successfully configured and verified.

  2. You will need to log in using your StarID credentials.

    1. Students: StarID@go.minnstate.edu
    2. Faculty/Staff: StarID@minnstate.edu
  3. Once signed in, you will be prompted to provide more security information to your account. Click Next.

The next screen will allow you to select your additional verification options.

  4. Under "What's your preferred option?", select Call my Authentication Phone and select your personal phone number.
Note: Employees, do not use your office phone. Normandale employees use Microsoft Teams for their phone system. You will be locked out of your phone, unless you're logged in on a different device.

  5. Select Alternate authentication phone
Enter a phone number different from your Authentication phone number. This is a backup phone number if you cannot be reached at the Authentication Phone number. This can be a trusted spouse, friend, child, etc.

  6. Click Save
If you get a call to with a code, but you did not request one, do not press the key to Approve.

If you lose your mobile device or change mobile devices, please contact the ITS Help Desk at (952) 358-8181 for instructions on how to regain access to your Office 365 account.
